I know it's early.. End of season mods?

What are you planning to do to your bike during the off season?

I will be doing the following..

K&N air filter

Replacing my old airbox with an open one, it basically seals just the top and bottom of the filter and allows for free-er air flow, but has a slightly louder intake noise.

Putting the pegs from the lightning version of the Xb on my firebolt. They're an inch lower, and should help with my comfort.

That's all I have for now. Should be a cheap set of mods. Not costing more than 2-300 total.

MikeSP1 09-03-2009 01:55 PM

Intake snorkel, lights, levers, titanium exhaust, and maybe a PC if I can find a dyno nearby to tune it.

Particle Man 09-03-2009 02:08 PM

conversion from clip-ons to handle bars. I'm tired of leaning that far forward, even with the heli-bars.

Have you done the breather re-route?

pauldun170 09-03-2009 02:25 PM

I suppose I should bleed the clutch lines\fluid
I suppose I should strip off the body work and do the "lets see if any screws\bolts came off" AKA "shit forgot to put loctite on that bitch"
I suppose I should get some silicone to quiet down those rattly mirrors.
I suppose I should get the carbs off and

I suppose I should do all sorts of stuff...

Might just drain the coolant, change the oil, yank the battery and put the cover on it.

Might might might might

Dave 09-03-2009 02:30 PM

id reAllly like to do new fairings but that may have to wait for tax refund time

CasterTroy 09-03-2009 02:45 PM

If I don't sell the motard:

105mm Bore,105mm Liner and a JE 105 Piston. Carrillo or Falicon Rod, Spring Kit, G4 Cam(or similar),Gas-flow, Keihin 39mm FCR's

Apoc 09-03-2009 03:55 PM

Trade harley for Busa... That gonna be my off season mod.

Trip 09-03-2009 03:58 PM

Camping Gear
Maybe HIDs and fog lights
Maybe sell Vario side bags for a set of Vega Pros
Dual Sport Suit
Dual Sport Boots

tached1000rr 09-03-2009 08:04 PM

CBR 1000 change all fluids, fresh front pads with stainless steel line on front brake only. K&N Filter Possibly HIDS

F4I- K&N filter, fresh fluids, inspect front pads and replace if necessary

I want a Suzuki Gel seat, and maybe a PC5

derf 09-03-2009 08:59 PM

Audio electronics, valentine one, ipod, bike to bike commo, and hardwire them all to my helmet. Looking at the same setup Tigger has.

Possibly a set of HID lights on the mirrors.

And ride a bunch

Save yourself some money and take a dremel to your old airbox and buy the hardware at Lowes or whatever. I bought the open airbox kit from American Sportbike and all I ended up using was the hardware. Otherwise you have to figure out how to mount the servo thingy or get the servo eliminator... fuck that. BadWeb should have the details.

I'm not sure about that shit. I mean, the only thing I think it did for me was make me feel better that oil and shit wasn't running through my intake. If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't... unless of course I was taking my bike all apart anyway... like I did.

OneSickPsycho 09-03-2009 09:56 PM

Oh for my bike... I hope to strip all the body work off, hack the subframe into a solo seat, put some PIAA's on the front, paint the tank black, maybe hack the exhaust, and then scare small children and old ladies.

Right now the only thing I am worried about is rebuilding the master cylinder on my front brake so it starts working properly again. :bash:

CrazyKell 09-03-2009 10:33 PM

Changing the oil and putting new tires on. That's it this year. That is IT I say. ;)

OneSickPsycho 09-03-2009 10:53 PM

OH shit... I forgot... stainless brakelines, cable clutch conversion, and new tires...

racedoll 09-03-2009 11:07 PM

Hoping to start to bring my TL back to life, and a rear shock on the priller.

I have a 99TLS that I took apart and am powdercoating the frame, subframe, rims, swingarm and a few other bits. Also got a clear clutch cover and some other goodies. I also need to replace the clutch since that was on its way out. Also can get in and seal up the clutch pushrod and countershaft seals since I had them leaking on me. I also had weisco TLR pistons put in and a thinner head gasket. And the funny thing was after that my mileage improved.

My futura is my daily commuter and weekend bike for now, needs a bit of maintenance but is otherwise running well.

I also have a 2000 gsxr 750 track bike but will be doing one or 2 days this year and selling it for something newer at the end of the season.

Riding season is pretty much done here. Another month and itll be too cold for even short rides.

2 1/2 months, and there should be enough snow for the sled!

Inbetween is atv time!

My offseason is going to be over in a couple of weeks since I refuse to ride in 110 degree heat. I will be getting a new to me SV to start it off. Its coming to me stock, so fender eliminator, and a custom seat to start and then ride until my arms fall off.

That gel seat needs to go (I think you said you were getting that on there) if you're worried about height... I found that my gel seat on my '03 rose me up about an inch and a half...

Tmall 09-04-2009 02:18 PM

Sigh..

I am incredibly house poor, as I just bought the place I've been living in for the last couple years.

I was just at the dealer, talking to the service manager. He mentions he has a brand new K&N he's going to install in a couple weeks. Of course, I had to ask "Wanna sell it and order yourself another?"

$85 later, I'm down one "off season" mod. And I'll be eating Ramen for a few days..

It's hard to say. I did the reroute when I was rebuilding the bike. Not riding it for a few months then cutting out the airbox, putting in a K&N, doing the breather reroute, and putting the Special OPS pipe on there makes it a bit difficult to know if one thing had much of an impact over another. All that said, doing those mods did seem to make the bike feel stronger and pretty much whacked out that whole 'hit the throttle and almost stall' thing off idle that sometimes happens... Legitimate performance improvement.... :idk: but the motherfucker sounded SICK.

Fuck that shit... big waste of money. Take a look at the amount of oil that actually makes it's way out of the breathers and that fucking catch can is a joke. I put a little breather filter I got at Advanced Auto Parts for like $6 on mine. After nearly 2k miles, not a fucking drip... the filter looked new.

Hey, speak for yourself! The earliest I've ever put mine away was Halloween. Usually mid November. Getting that late into it though means rides get a little fewer and further between:lol:

On the VF I'll probably get some new rubber and store it away for when it comes back out. Maybe some new fork seals.

The Bandit, hopefully, wont even belong to me long enough to get winterized. If it does then I dont know what, if anything, I'll want to do with it. Possibly a new chain since I seem to be developing a stiff link.

Probably some new gear for the GF. Some of the stuff she used to wear on the back doesnt seem to cut it now that she's piloting her own.

I've already got the Drummer and the K&N, so the breather is next. I'm not fucking with the air box. I'll let the snorkle do it's thing. I dont want to remap this bike, which is why I'm not doing the air box.

As for the catch can, I'm going your route, just a small filter down there somewhere. I think I wanna route my hoses down the back of the frame and dump out behind the left peg.

You trading the bandit? Whats in your future?

Unfortunately, up here anyway, snow has been coming really early (and the days of me riding to Halifax from moncton in snow are over for me :skep:) the last couple of years.

The sad thing is, there wont be enough for the sled till x-mas. I wish it was just an automatic switching of seasons. from 25 degrees and sunny one day, to -25 with 8 feet of snow the next. Thats the way it should be, imo! Fuck spring and fall!

RedRider2k2 09-05-2009 07:01 PM

It would certainly be a lot more convenient. Unlike now where it will drop a foot of snow then melt out in time for a weekend ride sometimes:lol:

As for the Bandit, I put it up for sale recently. No rush to get rid of it since this is a poor time to sell a bike but if it does, it's a great time to buy one!

I'm keeping my eye on a few different ones that are for sale. Z1000, 636, 929, 954...Not one that I'm watching right now but there is an 07 ZX10SE going for $6000 right now. Dont see that lasting too long. I figure whatever I do I will be thinking about selling the VF in the spring or early summer too. Maybe try to find a little newer 500 Ninja for Tracy.

Its a lot of cash, and you have to be within the genral area for it to work. It wont page you when your 100 miles away. I forget what the specifics were, but i'd maybe look at some better aftermarket systems if I were you.

I didnt enjoy the zx10 I rode much at all. Then again, it feels tiny, like travis's buell.

z1000's look like they'd be hella fun though. You owe me a ride on a bike for throwing you the keys to the 51 (you were going really fast, you know!). So buy the z1000 so I can take it for a ride. I really, really wanna try one.

I loved the 929 I rode (a buddy out west had one, and we traded bikes for 100km or so), never rode a 954, but they are hot!

My friend has a Cobra, and it works nicely.

I live out in the country, and dont take it to work, So im usually not close enough to my bike to make it worthwhile for me unless im on it.

But when I bought the crossbones, it was a lot more than 100$ (i got the keyless security though, and I love it)

I am hoping to go where the season never ends. I know Gas up in Michigan where the first snow fall hits mid August so I'd be interested in what he's going to do to that E-Glide.

My KTM is done, the only thing I am waiting for are tech grips snake skins for the tank--not a really a winter mod.

My HD on the other hand is going to get a couple of things. I have a 95" kit done by a reputable builder in PA. It puts down 110 HP and 119 lb/ft of torque. I may have him do the stroker bottom end which the rest of my build can handle. I may also do a 55mm TB when if I do that. I also need new wheels and tires. I am going to do a deuce solid rear and a 21" spoke in the front. I bought the wheels in June for a great price and didn't feel like doing that over the summer (lazy mostly). Or I may say screw it, sell it and by and FLHX. Just a thought.

Is the 96" that much? Wow, I am surprise because the 88" bikes have no go at all.

There is allot more in the 96 than the 88 I have rode both.

Don't doubt it. My brother has an 07 Fatboy that he got used. It was a low mileage trade in that I thought the owner may have thrown cams in (like the SE203s) because it would smoke my Heritage when it was stock like I was dragging a boat anchor. Maybe that's just the diff between an 88" and a 96".

Not sure. But for me its about longevity and realiability on this bike.

Yup, it was a major improvement. Lotsa torque too.

But, they still vibrate like water lines in an old house when you crank on them.

Probably some new gear for the GF. Some of the stuff she used to wear on the back doesnt seem to cut it now that she's piloting her own.

Since this post she's got new Boots, Gloves and Pants...Guess that's done with. I've been putting on a lot more miles than I had anticipated too so it looks like I may need a tire for myself before the season is over. If not, over the winter for sure.

i'm thinking pipes / intake / and power commander over winter. if there's anything left in the sofa cushions after that I may put a set of bags on it for the inevitable trip.

A lot of harley shops prefer to tune SERT or the TTS module. I believe they all cost about the same. TTS actually makes the SERT but the TTS is more "tunable."

I have the TTS with a D&D fatcat and the bike runs like a dream, no decel pop, no flat spots, etc. The D&D isn't badly priced (less than the V&H pro-pipe) and is a better power pipe. That is if you like the 2:1 look which I happen to--personal taste. G/L with whatever you get and I hope the sofa cushions rain money.

I iwll be redoing the front and rear suspension on the priller but thats only after the bike i sput away for the winter since I am still commuting on it and I dont see me swapping springs and installing a new rear shock in one day.

other than that I will hopefully get the TL project rolling and get the track bike sold as well.
