The Tiller Rides Again...

Just got back from putting about 45 miles on the TLR... feels damn good. This weekend I tore her down, swapped the hydro clutch for a cable clutch (aka the BEST mod ever), installed stainless brake lines and new pads in the front, changed the oil and flushed the engine, etc... you know all that shit you're supposed to do after the bike has been sitting for a year. Tonight I finished bleeding the lines and flushed the rear brake system... figured that would be a good idea because it was close to the color of the last shit I took (and I had eaten Oreos)... Put some air in the tires, geared up, and was off.

Everything pretty much fell into place... It was tough getting used to the new clutch action, but after a number of stop and go's I got the feel for it... Worked the brakes a bit, going then slowing and eventually some panic stops. Flawless.

I did notice some hesitation at some points... combo of old gas and plugs that are probably ready to be changed I'm sure. A tune-up is certainly warranted....

Also on the agenda... CLEAN THE BIKE. It's fucking filthy... ugly (and not in the way that I like ugly)... Prolly put the lower fairings back on, for now :D... New tires are needed, possibly a new battery, and new chain/gearing. Then in the long run... Proper uglification... no body work, chopped subframe, reroute all the wiring/coolent lines, a new radiator, under-seat the battery, lights, paint, etc, etc...

:boobs:

Want to ride a fiddy?

Particle Man 02-23-2010 09:39 PM

so I'm not the only one who prefers a cable clutch over a hydro? Phew.

Cool...

G-Rex 02-23-2010 10:22 PM

I've been happy with the hydraulic clutch on my TLR for 10 years now..

What is it about it that you like so much? I'm not a wheelie guy...I know I know..blasphemy when owning a liter twin. :lol

t-homo 02-23-2010 10:55 PM

good to hear man.

Same here, man. I had no problems with clutch engagement or what-have-you.
Same thing on my 1125R. :idk:

Disagree.
Best mod ever is swapping that stupid boat anchor of a rotary damper for a real shock.
Unfortunately, I never had the money to do Penske or Ohlins. I was going to pick up the Bitubo shock, but their dealer network sucked.

Good for you man. I'm really glad to hear it. Throw up a few pics of that monster.

I'm not much of a wheelie guy either... For me it was all about feel. With the hydro clutch there was no feel for the thing engaging which drove me nuts. With the cable clutch you can feel it engaging much much better...

Cutty72 02-24-2010 11:45 AM

Glad you're back on it!
How did your knee take it?

No problems what-so-ever... For anyone with joint pain, I highly recommend TriFlex from GNC. It seriously improved my situation within a couple days of use and after a week or so I had little or no pain. I keep forgetting to take it, but things are still good. I am definitely going to be buying more of this shit.

I said "not much of a wheelie guy"... Honestly... Never really done a wheelie on the Tiller.

Not that I haven't considered it, but with the 60 or so miles I put on it yesterday (ONSSP went for her FIRST ride last night after my original post), I have probably 200 miles on this bike. The timing of my kneecap was impeccable.

dReWpY 02-24-2010 08:22 PM

how do you like the Tiller?

how man of that 200 has been real riding?

Everyone should ride a TLR at one point in their life! Just my opinion though! :D

dReWpY 02-24-2010 08:30 PM

i rode something better then a tiller, its called the RC-51
:redflip:

:lol

My best friend had an RC51 a while back. Riding them back to back, the RC honestly sucks *in stock form*. It was much better once he put exhaust and a Power Commander on it, but stock, it was a pig.

I LOVE the brakes though! :D

dReWpY 02-24-2010 08:40 PM

i agree, the stock bike sucks... but i have never ridden a TLr so i have no comparision

Other than some spirited on/off ramps, nothing even close to real riding... No real riding because there's no real roads.

I will say this, it's a comfortable rig. Better than the 954 for the longer haul I think... from what little I've got it over on it's side she's nice and planted. I think I'm REALLY gonna love it when pushing the envelope.

You're missing out man. The TL is a helluva ride.

come visit, i can put you through the paces

Hydrant 02-24-2010 11:02 PM

I agree with G-rex and Adeptus_Minor. I still have the hydro clutch with a SS line and I don't seem to mind it. I'm not a wheelie person either, but it does fine for me. SS lines all around on the TL and it seemed to brake and shift better.

Also, probably the best mod I've done to the TL other than the full exhaust, gutted airbox, BMC filter and Yoshi Remap is to get rid of that big ass rotary damper and replace it with an Ohlins. I'm by no means a hardcore canyon carver, but in the little bit that I do go after, I could tell a difference between the rotary and Ohlins.

And as far a G-rex comparing his TLR to a RC-51 is just a little unfair. He might be a little bias when it comes to his TL and a RC-51. His TL might not be what most would call "stock", or even close to. Its a pretty badass machine.

:whatwhat:

G-Rex 02-25-2010 06:54 AM

It's amazing what the right modifications can do. :D

They are hard to find tho.. I'm in the market for a vtwin sportbike - Either RC or TLR and they are hard to come by, by me..

I bought mine in the winter of 2000 when they were still relatively easily available, and I had to drive to North Carolina to get it. There were just NONE for sale near me.

I can't imagine how hard it is to find one now. :/

dReWpY 02-25-2010 11:01 PM

My rc sold at the local dealer for askinh price, $4,400
To think they gave me 3500 for it

They aren't too difficult to find. Finding one that hasn't received the extended swingarm wide ass tire treatment, been wrecked, or had some shitty "custom" paint job is difficult. Finding one without any of that and for a reasonable price is even harder. I am also a little wary of high mileage examples as I have seen a few TLRs (admittedly used hard) that grenaded their trans between the 15k and 20k mileage marks.

Nice dude. always feels good to get back in the saddle. i'm hoping to go for a rip on the duc next weekend if weather allows.

as for the clutch argument... cable clutch is highly preferred to me... anyone ever try to do a race start with hydraulic clutch? Holy shit is that hard... the friction zone is a cunthair's width... it always resulted in a couple pogoing wheelies when I raced my buddys 560smr

Cutty72 02-27-2010 02:41 AM

Drag only. It wasn't too bad on the Buell, but then again even sitting on the airbox I held the front end up about a foot through the first 3 gears.
