Don't you hate it when.....

you fill up your bike but forget to reset your trip odometer:wtfru::?:

Particle Man 04-05-2010 09:41 PM

Yes.

Sucks not having a gas gauge. *grumble*

CrazyKell 04-05-2010 09:42 PM

Doesn't bother me a bit...I have a fuel gauge. :lmao:

Trip 04-05-2010 09:45 PM

i also have a fuel gauge. I never use my trip odometer, I sometimes use my Zumo to keep track of mpg.

Particle Man 04-05-2010 09:47 PM

I found that on those bikes WITH fuel indicators, they're often quite pessimistic and when I've had one I still use the trip odometer...

I always do it to calculate mpg. Fuel gauge or not. Do it in my cars too.

Gas Man 04-05-2010 11:26 PM

i NOT ONLY HAVE A GAS GAUGE, I HAVE 2 TRIPS, AND A REMAINING COUNTING DOWN NUMBER TILL EMPTY LIKE YOUR CAR MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE. bUT i HAVE. rEMEMBER IT HAS EVERYTHING AS mARKO STATED!

It's very heavy, luckily lenoir city cops are nice and have small gas cans. I was like a 1/4 mile from the station too, I thought I could make it.

I have all that, less the gas gauge.

that had to suck, I have had to push a bike or 2 for mechanical failures and the such but so far never ran out of gas. I did coast into a few station on fumes though :)

I ran out once and a local cop stopped and told me I should get a ticket for improper operation of a motor vehicle.

Effer.

z06boy 04-06-2010 09:10 AM

I "thought" I had run out of gas about 20 years ago on a 88 Ninja 600R (first bike) but then remembered it had a reserve switch/tank. :wtfru: I had actually go off of the bike and started walking before I remembered...dumbazz move but it never happened again.

Shoulda took his gun and shot him for being an ass. I can see them either helping you out or maybe teasing you a bit because youre that guy, but that sjust an asshole move.

Same here, I track mileage in an iPod touch app. The fuel guage on my bike isnt recise enough for me, I like to know exactly how many miles I have left in my tank, Ive had to push out of gase bikes before. In my car the fuel guage ususally works but every once in a while it will just go to empty for no reason.

I know my mileage but I can also have a peek in the tank and have a look.

I usually reset my trip meter but if I don't remember it's no biggie. :idk:

Rider 04-06-2010 09:29 AM

I had an old Chevy P/U years ago that had a broken gas gauge so I had to use my trip odometer to know when to get fuel. About every 150 miles. 16 gallon tank @ 10MPG highway. More frequent if I was heavy on the gas pedal.

In Germany it is illegal to run out of gas, usually only enforced on the autobahn however.

Trip 04-06-2010 04:08 PM

I didn't run out on the road, I felt the loss of power and pulled into a city park park lot. The cop happened to be there.

Not sure if its a count down but when the light comes on the odometer goes to zero and starts counting up so you know how many miles you have ridden on reserve.

Sixxxxer 04-06-2010 06:12 PM

I just usually look at my odometer and see where Im at mileage wise when I get gas...Its simple math...Add on about 130 Miles to your Odo and thats when you should start looking for gas...We'll for me anyway.

I tried that, but then I forgot my mileage

I've done that but the number somehow evaporates after the first cager tries to kill me

Dnyce 04-07-2010 03:50 AM

before a fairly long trip i always gas up anyway, but so far ive gone as far as 21miles once the reserve light comes on.

Looni2ns 04-07-2010 11:11 AM

Lordy! Take a short ride, fill it up, and reset the bloody trip odo.

My Bandit didn't have anything but trip odo, so I got in the habit. When I got the SV, I took it out the first time, and rode it 'til the light came on. Comes on steady at 152, and you're riding on fumes by 155. Haven't pushed it beyond that, and don't care to. Running out of gas w/a fuel injected bike isn't fun. Most of the time, I just rely on the trip odo. Get close to 150, and I fill her up.

the '03 and '04 SV didn't have the blinking fuel light (no second sensor, just the one) so when it comes on, it only comes on solid.

It's at about 1.5 gallons so it isn't a huge deal, but it would be nice to have that second level.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
On the 1125... you have 25 miles from low fuel light staying on constant, to no go. SO it's kinda a count down.

Whats fun is playing on twisties with low fuel. lean it over in a turn, light comes on, ride a bit up and down, it goes off. back and forth...

Yes, I'm easily amused.

MN lakes country... a couple hours from where I live.

And remember, I had it out in Utah in 08. Awesome roads out there, just watch out for the Mormons!

t-homo 04-07-2010 03:48 PM

My bike has 2 trip odos and then a fuel odo for how far you have gone since the low fuel light came on. I typically use trip 1 for total miles that day, 2 for since I filled up, then can get about 30-40 once the fuel one comes on. I typically get 45 mpg and the fuel light comes on with almost a full gallon left.

Cutty72 04-07-2010 03:55 PM

Trip 1 for fuel fill ups
Trip 2 for oil change interval
Low fuel trip for if I'm not paying attention, or stretch too far between gas stops!

Smittie61984 04-07-2010 11:32 PM

It doesn't bother me so bad. I usually can remember where I filled up. If I fill up at 100miles I know that I really need to fill up at 240. Or sometimes I'll put on about 50 more miles and then fill up to reset.

Tsunami 04-07-2010 11:53 PM

I only have a speedo on the dualie. I set the odo when i roll out of the garage so I can keep track of how many miles I have logged but not for gas guaging. I usually just shake the tank and see how much fuel i have sloshing around.

Ok but mine actually counts down mile by mile... starting somewhere in the 220-240mile range... counts down... till 25 mile and then it say LO. You can force it to read, in which even when it gets to ZERO it still goes!! I know!

I do the same thing with my 2 trips.

And I have a low fuel light as well.

That's what I do.

I hate resetting the trip odometer on my scooter. It reset the achieved top speed as well. Hey, when you ride a 50-cc scooter, hitting 52-MPH on the flat is pretty impressive, and hitting 60 on a downhill with the chassis shakin' and the wheels bouncin'...that's bragging rights.

racedoll 04-10-2010 11:10 PM

Yes! I do this in the car too and it pisses me off.

Mr Lefty 04-10-2010 11:23 PM

I have two trips... occasionally I'll forget... but that's where it's see through Tanks FTW!

just lean over and see... oh... about half full... good to go

Low fuel light, but I always reset the Trip.

You have a see through tank? Pics?

Is it one of those huge plastic aftermarket bolt ons?

Homeslice 04-12-2010 02:49 AM

I just use the low fuel light, 1.5 gallons left gives you plenty of time to find a gas station. I don't care what the exact fuel economy is, that's not why I ride a motorcycle.
