Test ride

From Sherrie's thread - http://www.twowheelfix.com/showthread.php?t=14230

How many actually got to test ride your bike before buying it?

CrazyKell 04-14-2010 09:37 PM

Nope. None. Ever.

tached1000rr 04-14-2010 10:22 PM

I did for every one except my current CBR just because it was LATE, raining etc....

pauldun170 04-14-2010 10:36 PM

When I bought my first motorcycle, the first tine I ever rode a motorcycle I took it for a test ride.
Second one, I rode on the back.
those after...no

Dave 04-14-2010 10:50 PM

only one that was test ridden was the hurricane and i had a friend do that since i wasnt riding yet

derf 04-14-2010 11:00 PM

I've watched folks ride bikes that I have bought, and I've test ridden bikes that I didn't buy, but I've bever test ridden a biek that I have bought.

With all that beig said, I wouldnt consider buying a bike without at least seeing it move under its own power

njchopper87 04-14-2010 11:18 PM

I was offered to test ride, but I wasn't comfortable with the idea since I just got out of the MSF course. The dude even volunteered to bring it to my place, which was great.

Gas Man 04-14-2010 11:40 PM

never

marko138 04-15-2010 05:55 AM

GSXR, yes. Buell, no. When I sold the GSXR, dude did not test ride it.

wildchild 04-15-2010 08:12 AM

I have test driven a couple over the years but for the most part i don't even think about it. if they offer i may or may not.

if it's a new bike and I want to try it i'll find a demo ride somewhere.

SteveP 04-15-2010 08:13 AM

Buell - Yes
aprilia - No

Rider 04-15-2010 08:28 AM

In the case of street bikes, I've never attempted to sell privately. Dirt bikes, nobody has ever asked to ride them. Start them up, sure, but never taken for a spin.

Cruzergirl 04-15-2010 08:53 AM

V-star, No
Kingpin, Yes

z06boy 04-15-2010 08:53 AM

I don't think I've ever test ridden a bike before buying it. I have taken test rides during dealer promos but I wasn't actually interested in buying a bike at the time.

Bluestreak 04-15-2010 09:57 AM

Ninja 500 - Belonged to a friend. Rode it for 3 weeks before transfering the title
99 R6 - Purchased privately. Rode it around the block before I handed over the money.

MILK 04-15-2010 11:41 AM

Not my VFR. I did get to test a Vrod though - that was back in the day when I still drove a Rebel 250! I drove off the curb trying to figure out where to put my feet!! Nothing bad happened thankfully!!

shmike 04-15-2010 12:00 PM

I have never bought a used bike without riding it first nor would I.

The 675 was my first new bike and I bought it without having ever seen one.

I don't think they even had brochures available when I put the deposit down.

KSGregman 04-15-2010 12:36 PM

Never.

skiergirl 04-15-2010 12:53 PM

I've owned and bought 5 bikes in my 18 yrs of riding and have never test ridden one of them.

that's funny, I wasn't conting dirtbikes. I've test ridden every used dirtbike I ever bought. usually just a quick run up the block and back. with of course the understanding that if johnny law is nearby the ticket is mine to have.

OTB 04-15-2010 01:42 PM

Depends on the bike. If it is a low miles version of a bike, I'll give it a good going over; mebbe ride it if I think its got some issues or it's older, or it's a high perf bike with a reputation for blowing 2nd or 3rd gears. On high miles bikes; always. The test ride will show issues that even an in depth walkaround will never show... like a tweeked fork or frozen brakes or a sloppy, stiff or worn gearbox; hesitation or backfiring from a wrongly tuned PC etc.......

I usually have no problem getting a test ride(fat, slow olde guy with wad of cash in hand ); on the other hand; you're gonna have to make me real comfortable before I'll decock and let YOU go for a test ride....

If it won't start/run....expect a substantial discount....

Cutty72 04-15-2010 02:33 PM

Test rode the Buell. Rode the SV in a circle around the parking lot, but that's it, and the sales guy got mad. He thought I was just going to sit on it and listen to it run

Guy that bought gf's 250 wanted a test ride, I said only after cash in hand.
He handed over cash, I signed over title, and he still didn't want to ride it! I ended up riding it into his pickup.

My Ninja 250 I more or less bought sight unseen. No pictures available and it was in NY. Drove up there, Erik test rode it for me. Handed over money and left with my "new" bike.

The ZX6RR I bought sight unseen. I saw the '03 1-1/2 years prior and liked it. A friend had an '04 636 that I test rode for a comparison, but turned out to be nothing like my 600.

Switch 04-15-2010 11:17 PM

I did, with cash in hand.

Captain Morgan 04-15-2010 11:34 PM

Yes, every bike I've ever bought. Old Honda, old Kawasaki, Katana, R6.

When selling the R6, I let the guy test ride it. Considering he drove 4 hours, I figured he was pretty damn serious about buying it. Plus, he gave me the keys to his car, which was in my driveway and was worth more than the R6.

What are your thoughts on both? I'm going to Victory demo days this weekend and plan to ride the Vegas, Kingpin and Hammer. May even ride the jackpot, if they have it for the demos.

nhgunnut 04-23-2010 07:17 AM

My ninja 250 I let my dad test ride it cause I have never been on a bike. The VFR, I test rode before paying. The ER-6N, I payed before taking off. It felt crazy. Flew all that way and who knows. I could have hated it, but I just strapped my back pack to the pas seat and I just mounted up and headed on out.

Mr Lefty 04-23-2010 06:47 PM

never.

I bought the ZZR in Jan in alaska... no test ride possible.

Bought the RR in Jan while I was still in Korea... no test ride possible

bought the DRZ in Oct... and had ridden trip's DRZ... paid for it then rode it in stock form for 5hrs while they were working on the bikes ahead of mine in the service line.

I've actually never test rode a bike in my life...

only three bike's ive ridden that weren't mine were my brother's 250, Amorok's cruiser, and Trip's DRZ

Cutty72 04-24-2010 04:31 AM
