Robbie D motherfucker... and I think they would go well with my bare metal look that I am going for with the streetfighter. Though, if they come in and are shiney, I'll bust out some sandpaper to them to dull them up. Not looking for bling, looking for mean.

Trip 01-31-2011 10:51 AM

those mofos are going to be chrome shiny. LOL

Nothing a little 200 grit sandpaper and a couple of beers couldn't handle.

derf 01-31-2011 11:04 AM

Tigger has or had something similar

ontwo 01-31-2011 11:34 AM

A friend of mine had the Driven aluminum grips and he hated them.

CasterTroy 01-31-2011 11:47 AM

My busa came with them and they SUCKED.....especially in anything less than 60 degree weather. They would FREEZE my hands. It was like holding onto a popcicle.

Sixxxxer 01-31-2011 12:02 PM

He lives in Orlando, It only goes below 60 for like two weeks out of the year

Good info... Some of them have rubberized grips, but I was thinking the all aluminum ones would be better...

Anybody else?

Dave 01-31-2011 12:39 PM

Got access to a lathe? You could turn your own

Also they are on amazon if you dont feel like shipping from hong kong.

Save the $10, you will be dissapointed with them, its the crappy feeling cheapo aluminum, get a regular set of grips at the store and call it a day

Had good luck with shipping from China... probably because the shit is drop-shipped from somewhere in the US 9/10 times...

Probably right... I just think the look would be interesting given what my overall picture is for the bike...

$10 and a half hour with some sandpaper vs $10 of bar stock, a lathe I don't have, and how many hours?... maybe I'm missing something...

See you could have just said I don't have a lathe. Would have been much simpler

fasternyou929 01-31-2011 04:32 PM

Someone brought up the cold weather, but wouldn't they be scorching hot in the Florida summer??

On a hot NC summer day it will take a few seconds for the "holy shit, that's hot!" moment to pass when I grab the stock grips. It seems solid metal would prolong that moment quite a bit.

askmrjesus 01-31-2011 06:29 PM

Aluminum grips make about as much sense as Titanium socks.

If I'm not mistaken, the whole idea behind grips, is to provide grip.

Rubber? Ok. Leather? Maybe. Aluminum? Not so much.

JC

Homeslice 01-31-2011 06:38 PM

Could be a lot worse. At least those have some rubber on them. I have seen some custom chopper guys with no rubber at all.

That's what I was thinking of, (didn't click the link).

But...What do you do when the rubber bits wear off? How thick is the rubber? Why do they look like ass?

That's the problem with a lot of Chinese CNC stuff. The "looks like ass factor".

I used to sell these at my shop. Spendy? Oh hell yes. Perfect? Yep.

I have the Driven grips and they work very well for me. They are not all aluminum but have aluminum inserts. I like them. I have also owned the MoMo carbon fiber grips (actually, I still have them) which have leather inserts, also nice grips. Solid aluminum grips are textured to provide grip, btw... I would think that vibration would be a problem.:idk: Oh and my GF ordered cheap grips from China...yea not good...

I'd recommend them to have some rubber. Sure would suck to slip off the handle.

Dnyce 02-01-2011 12:17 AM

I have the driven grips, se as AL, I like em alot.
For u guys that say it would be cold, or hot, don't u wear gloves? I've never noticed grip temp with gloves...

I have no idea what they are on about...ambient temperature is ambient temperature...:idk: Does aluminum produce heat or cold? Wouldn't that go for the rest of the parts on your bike made from Aluminum?

Dnyce 02-01-2011 03:29 AM

Btw driven grips are cheap, spend the extra $20 for em instead of the Chinese knockoff. Grip colors and aluminium collars/inserts are replaceable and available in dif colors too.

Yep, I have new grips for my bike, they were $8 for the replacements.

Oh yeah, I forgot metal won't raise past ambient temperature when placed in direct sunlight. :skep:

The only metal your body touches on your bike is (on some bikes) your gas tank, so I'm not sure what point you're making there.

Direct sunlight with your hands on them? Let me get this straight, you believe that silver colored alum grips will get hotter than black rubber grips... well, I've never noticed anything but you'd know better, I'm sure.

btw my frame is black aluminum and I've never burnt my leg on it...

Not to mention that my bar ends are metal...that's a trip to the burn unit just WAITING to happen!

Didn't realize you kept your hands on the clip-ons the whole time your bike was parked. Clearly my bad.

Tell you what, the next sunny, hot day you lay your hand on the roof of a silver car and I'll put mine on the tire. We'll see who pulls away first.

And then there's the whole density thing that makes metal retain heat longer than rubber, but I can see how you missed that in my original post. Next time I post in a thread you're in, I'll be sure to use pictures for you.

Well, I'd appreciate it!!! I certainly recognize your point but you fail to understand that I already have these grips and they haven't burnt me yet. And I posted pics...

You sure did, about 5 posts after my post that asked more of question than declared anything. Then you brought up ambient temperature and lost any credibility. :)

I'm ready for some warmer weather already! I didn't make any street trips last year, just track days and rode to work a few times. Hope to get at least one mountain trip in this year. Definitely down for catching up though, just not Deal's Gap. That has to be the least fun place to ride anymore.

Depends on when you go... Me and the GF went and honestly were about the only people there. If you can go during the week, score! The thing about the Gap is that it's a great starting point and an easy/cheap place to stay.

Wait did you say "credibility"? On this site? Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
