Police: Drunken Motorcyclist Kills L.I. Teen Changing Flat Tire on Bike

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A teen boy changing a flat tire on his bicycle was struck and killed by a drunken motorcyclist Monday night on Long Island, police say.

Mona Rivera reports

Matthew Scarpatti, 19, of Dix Hills, was struck around 8 p.m. while changing his tire on the bike path of the Wantagh State Parkway.

Police say James Ryan, of New Hyde Park, lost control of his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle and drove onto the bike path.

Scarpatti died at Nassau University Medical Center.

Police say Ryan was admitted to the intensive care unit with multiple injuries. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated, second degree vehicular manslaughter, second degree reckless manslaughter, reckless driving and second degree reckless endangerment.

My Grandparents house straddles that highway and my sister and I as kids would take that bike path.

You have to be blitzed outta your mind to end up on the path.

I've been invited to do a group ride that consists of the cruiser crowd however I was warned that it consists mainly of bar hopping.

I guess when a majority of the group have badges you can drink and ride as much as you like.

That's one thing I don't get.. I drink like a fish sometimes, even when I'm not supposed to(doctors orders) and I have on a few stupid occasions driven a car afterward but when I was on my bike... I'd never ever touch a single drop.

How can you attempt it on a bike?

I wonder that myself. I won't even throw a leg over my bike when I think I've had too much CAFFEINE much less alcohol.
