Why can't American car companies be like Japanese car companies?

Why indeed. The Japanese business leaders all look way into the future for their companies direction, whereas the US managment teams always look to capitolize in a two year time frame...May be because most of the japanese leadership is 20-30 years older than their American counterparts

Maybe it is because the culture is different. In Japan, workers tie their "company" to their lives. They make personal sacrifices for the good of "company." In America, and especially here in the South, we can barely get people to work if they do show up...except for pay day

GM has (or had) GMAC and Ford has Ford Motor Credit. Do you think Honda is going to loan people money to buy Mazdas? No...Honda Motor Credit is money borrowed from the Japanese government, whereas Ford Motor Credit is money borrowed from U.S. banks. Same shit IMO.
