Default Is Business the new Liberal Arts?

Liberal Arts degees take a lot of flack.....but is Business the new Liberal Arts?

Everyone I know takes Business. They're not further ahead than the LA grads.

Anyone else noticed the shift in paradigm?

Business was the party degree at UT when I was there. People who couldn't hack it in engineering transferred to the Business school.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

For the most part a business degree is more useful than a LA degree if 1) you are trying to get a job in business and 2) you have no experience. There are other times when it can give you an advantage but they are limited. Concerning the utility of the degree, even excluding work I use what I learned pretty often.

That would be me. I was not designed to do math and physics.

IMO English, Psych, and Business are all pretty generic degrees. As said above I would classify them as catch-alls. If a person is planning on going to grad school for something like Medicine or Law then it really doesn't matter but stand alone I have heard they are pretty useless besides being able to say you have a degree.

As far as having a B.S. in Biology that is something that carries specific knowledge of a subject rather than in dept general knowledge and can be applied in certain fields. When I was younger and working in sales I noticed that a lot of people I was interviewing against had Psych or English degrees but were still competing for the same job I was as a high school student...

I would say that these days businesses probably value a field specific degree or even a high school graduate with industry work experience over something like psych or english.

Yup, was the same at my school. All the frat boys, athletic scholarships, and party girls. Couple years ago my wife got an MBA, and she said the same about her classmates. I figure now that companies don't have money to piss away, the smart ones are dropping out of the MBA>all game.

Maybe catch all is a better way to put it.

But I don't actually believe your chances are better with business. I think a lot of employers just want to see A degree and don't actually care too much what it is. Obviously there are going to be exceptions to that rule.

MBA is another one....everyone goes and gets one of those.

esp. for any job outside of the entertainment industry.
