LOL
This happened to me last spring. It was when i was about to move back to columbus. I had my dad's SUV for more packing space..... but left my appt key on MY keyring with my dad..... doh! And one day my roommate left for work and locked the doors. My bedroom window didnt lock quite right, but it was way up on the second floor. So I grabbed a bench off of my neighbors back patio.... shimmied up and balanced on the wooden fence that separated our patio's and used spiderman fingers to slide the window and push it open. Then i stood the bench on its end against the siding and stepped off onto the bench and dove into the window. For those of you who havnt met me.... i'm 6'1 about 295. It must have been rediculous to see a big dude standing one foot on a 7 foot fence and the other on an upturned bench.... jumping thru a second story window....

Call my good friend, The Locksmith who would come open the door free of charge FTMFW!
I've had to use him twice before. It's good having friends with skilz!

I'd fake my own death.
Once my next of kin showed up with a locksmith to claim my possessions, I'd yell "surprise!" and enjoy my opened-for-free door. I'm also in the "would never cross my mind to call the fire department for something other than putting out fires" group Call me narrow-minded. I wouldn't call a locksmith to put out a fire, either. Most likely, if it were just the stupid lock on the knob, I'd shim it with a credit card or (preferably) a pair of screwdrivers. |

I'd call the locksmith. It would only cost a twelve of Bud Lime and I'd get to drink 4 of them (he drinks fast).

Here in Atlanta people are known to call 911 saying they are having a heart attack. To ride in an ambulance to our local basket case bum loving hospital (Grady Memorial) and then jump out of the ambulance and bail.
As for your situation. Don't waste the fire departments time. You made a mistake and it happens. Man/Woman up and bust a window. I'd also keep a spare key in some far off goofball location for the future.

I'd never think to call. Perhaps because I am an emergency worker and wouldn't even fathom calling the FD for something that wasn't an emergency. Advertised or not, it would never cross my mind.
I've called a lock smith before when my dead bolt wouldn't open and had to be drilled out. I've pulled over a 300 lb picnic table over to our car port and scrambled over a burning Texas "ruff" to jimmy open a second story window. My father would kick my ass if I didn't first break in or call someone qualified. |
