So what you're saying is that my Parisienne French as taught by a Spanish woman living in English Canada is pretty much useless...?

True. But you'd think the same would apply for mexicans seeking work and sanctuary in the states. They should LEARN English, if only to make it appear they belong here and arent illegal... |

It could be, depending on your dialect...Azoom is 100% right, what they teach in school is "proper" spain spanish, not typically what you are going to hear from the myriad of spanish speakers in the U.S. Go to spain, its a whole different ball field, but still slightly different.

Mexicans speaking spanish compared to someone from Spain speaking spanish imho would be similar to someone in London and someone from the deep south in the US speaking.
Sure...they are both speaking English but.... |

Those right now coming to the United States are surrounded by those that speak their language and/or having more people that are willing to bend over to help them in their own language. They have no necessity to learn. THAT sucks.

The more that they interact with society as a whole, the more likely they are to be caught if they're in the US illegally. With the entire sub-culture that has grown up around illegal immigrancy, there is virtually no need for them to ever learn English.
