An Akita will protect you like an Abrams Tank, but they are aggressive. I don't know how mine determines who comes close to me. Some people he growls at, and others he ignores. Even though he's neutered, I can't take him to the dog park with other dogs.

Here's a question: Why the FUCK do dogs only live 10 or 12 years? Seriously. Why?

It really sucks, that's for sure. I miss my shepherd something fierce (though he lived to 13-14)

Our newfs scared the living crap out of people despite being the most gentile and docile creatures on the planet. And they weren't all hyper and bark-ey. But damn did they shed. And drool. Oh my God, the drool.

Thanks GM. First I gotta convince the hubby. He REALLY wants a black lab, but I want something a little different. That and I honestly dont care for labs. They are great dogs, but hyper, loud, destructive, etc etc...granted any puppy I will face the same thing but well, you know...
I want something that will be loveable but will protect me if needed when he's away. Id love a Brinks type dog as long as its not a drooler...hows the shedding?? |

Bouvier des Flandres is another dog you might consider, Rae. They're long haired, but don't shed much at all. Here's a page of info about them
Bouvier
