Anyone do 4 wheel offroading, do a lift, etc...

This truck was mine a few years back, sold it to a friend who has put almost 100k on it in the last decade and treats it like its his only retarded cancer stricken child that likes to get a beating from time to time
The old toyotas can be had very cheap (i think i paid 2500 for it the way it is in the picture back in the late 90s), are durable and are indestructable.

Had an 84 Scrambler with a 1 ton Chevy drivetrain and 12 inches of lift on 40s and had a 401. Had a 78 blazer with 12 inches lift on 38s with a 468. My last was a 1992 Jeep Wrangler with a 3 inch lift, 31s, 4 cyl. axles and a mildly built I6. We wheeled every weekend, trails and mud, not a lot of rocks in Michigan. Looking for a new mud toy as we speak. Look for a chassis that is plentiful, durable and has parts available, Chevy, Ford, Toyota and Jeep are good starting points, look for Samurais or Geo Trackers for small and cheap fun.

This was my daily driver for a few years. Drove it to Manhattan and back many times, 85 in the fast lane, 3 bass cabinets in the back. Took it out in Jersey muck up to the rocker panels. Over the whoops in the pine barrons. Never got stuck. Used to remain topless most of the year.

Used too a little bit.
1985 Chevy Silverado. 6" lift with 35" tires. 350 crate engine with all the goodies. It now sits on my wife's ring finger... (should've kept the truck)

i have a pic on my wall at work of my old truck. no way to scan it though. it was a '79 f250 12 inches of lift 40" tires 4.56 gears. 4 speed trans with a 351M engine.
i don't do any real wheeling anymore, it's hard to find places to go up here. I did a ton of it in NC though when I lived there. Lots of fun but lots of parts breakage too. that said I am in the process of helping a buddy build a mud truck. so far 6 inches of lift, 85 chev 2500, small block 350, auto trans. |

We used to have a sweet samarai shop truck. I would buy another one in aheartbeat. Ours had:
Re-arched springs (over axle lift) with shackles, Toyota solid axles with ARB lockers in both ends, and a rock lobster double low transfer case. Boss paid for anything I wanted to do to it, so his nerdy kid could go 'wheelin with us every weekend. My personal vehicles were a '74 blazer on 38's with a 383, and a bone stock 86 Toyota Xtra cab 4 cyl (EFI), and a bone stock '90 four runner (V6 with auto). All were very good vehicles, but the sammy was ridiculous fun.

This was taken last week at Summit Lake on the road up Mount Evans. Guess which of these 4X4's is mine. Hint, it's been over most of the mountain passes in Colorado; pulled out more vehicles than it's pulled out itself; and has 246K miles on the original engine.
It's not the Ford. I've had that Jeep over 30 years. 360 engine, 4-speed with granny gear, and it's basically stock except for a modified HEI distributor and electric fuel pump. I've used it to go to many abandoned mines looking for minerals, and some high streams panning for gold. Didn't go through much mud. Too bad, because the color is a perfect match for mud. |

That old Cherokee is gorgeous.
I would love to do some 4wheeling (well, at least as far as a stock Avalanche can go), but I never really know where to go or how far I can push it before getting stuck (nobody to go with out here). Any hints on where to start? |
