insurance catch22
so i'm getting laid off 12/31 and was hoping to have everything lined up to get on Z's ins. 1/1
well her ins. wants a HIPPA cert, basically saying who was covered and how much from my employer. well that letter comes in my layoff/cobra package 2-3 weeks after my last day. her ins. co. Blue Cross Blue Shield, won't sign us (kids an me) up till 2/1 if i get them the letter mid jan. so jan we'd go uncovered or pay COBRA ins for $996 vs $3XX for her ins. co anybody w/ this experience?

Don't by the COBRA upfront. If something happens and you need it they will let you pay for the coverage at that point.

I would ask for clarification. Even if they do not sign you up until the February billing I bet you they backdate it to when coverage was lost. Cobra on the other hand you have a certain time frame to except (180 days?). You should be able to go without Cobra for January but if something major happens you are still in the grace period to sign up. I have been out of HR for many years so take all of this information with a handful of salt.
