altered states was made in 1980'ish-check that out, along the same lines...

city of god was so good i didnt realize it was subtitled-more of a suspense/drama/real story type tho

Sci Fi
alien
Action

Comedy
Super Troopers
Drama
Cast away
Action/Comedy/Drama combination
Boondock Saints

I dunno... Saying the Die Hard Series is painting with a pretty wide brush... Die Hard was AMAZING... Die Hard II sucked... Die Hard With a Vengence was again... Amazing. Live Free or Die Hard... ok, but pretty weak in the grand scheme of things.

And for the action/comedy/drama thing... It's hard to beat the Lethal Weapon series... even the ones that were relatively shitty.

That being said, The Usual Suspects is one of the finest movies ever made.

I'm with you on Altered States and City of God. I freaking HATED Donnie Darko. I usually love weird movies like DD, but for some reason I hated it.

Other than that, anything Kubrick, anything Cohen. Alien (singular) is one of the best sci-fi flicks along with Blade Runner. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but those old pre-CGI movies looked better. Hell, 2001 is over 30 years old and is more realistic than most of today's "blockbusters".

On the newer side, Pan's Labyrinth is my most recent favorite.
