I would like to think that I would turn it in. I would hope that I would turn it in. But I know it would be a tough decision. If I did keep it, I would spend forever looking over my shoulder to see if the rightful owner was right behind me. I have a guilty concience. I just do.
I have kept money I found before. After I spent it (it was around $300 - which was a shit ton of money for me at the time) I found out who it belonged to. I still feel bad 20 years later. I don't want that again.

Fifty bucks, in like-new condition, barely used

Big bag of money sitting next to an ATM, guaranteed to be on camera... I wouldn't even pick it up. I wouldn't get to keep it, so it can be someone else's responsibility.

Now, a duffel bag of cash washed up on the beach when no one else is around? That shit's paying some bills and buying some toys over the next couple of years.

I could really use the money right now but I would turn it in. If it was at the bank I would bring it in the bank to return it.

If I found it on the street I would try to find the owner.

I was watching a show about a couple that found about $50000-100000 in their back yard. They thought it over and in the end they decided to turn it in to the police. The law in that state said that they had to post an ad in the paper for 90 days so they did. Nobody replied so they were able to keep the money.

Better than not telling anyone, and then getting caught later.

When I lived in Fla, there was something in the news about a duffle bag full of coke falling out of the sky, I decided you'd be a fool to keep it, and when you turned it in you'd better make sure it has the right amount of coke in it, and the news reports the right amount.

You don't want the previous owner to come looking for any differences....

In this example, it's not about how much my conscience costs. If my wife and kids lived on peanut butter and jelly cause we couldn't afford groceries... damn straight it would be hard for me to return the money.

Suddenly finding out that you found 2 years worth of income fuels a lot of dreaming. I'd be lying if I said I would return it without thinking about what it would be like to go out and blow it all on a new bike/boat/jetski/truck/house etc...
