It's where Tennessee get's their "Volunteer State" quote from.

Personally, I like "Come and Take It" better...

I'm from PA and only moved here 5 1/2 years ago and Yes I had heard of the Alamo from history classes but it was skimmed over and could have been easily forgotten had I not moved here.

In all honesty if someone has mentioned it before I lived here I might have had to think a bit and all I could have told you was there was a famous battle of some kind. I never found history that interesting and didn't pay nearly as much attn as I probably should have in school.

I knew it had something to do with a fight.

My next guess was going to be, "Where Davie Crocket suplexed Paul Bunyan through a bingo hall table.."

I love Texas sometimes.

Too bad I don't like very many Texans.

BRAVO!

On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army outside San Antonio nearly caught them by surprise. Undaunted, the Texians and Tejanos prepared to defend the Alamo together. The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Anna's army. William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo sent forth couriers carrying pleas for help to communities in Texas. On the eighth day of the siege, a band of 32 volunteers from Gonzales arrived, bringing the number of defenders to nearly two hundred. Legend holds that with the possibility of additional help fading, Colonel Travis drew a line on the ground and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over — all except one did. As the defenders saw it, the Alamo was the key to the defense of Texas, and they were ready to give their lives rather than surrender their position to General Santa Anna. Among the Alamo's garrison were Jim Bowie, renowned knife fighter, and and David Crockett, famed frontiersman and former congressman from Tennessee.

There were no survivors.
"Thermopylae had her messenger of defeat; the Alamo had none."6 This famous quote conveys the notion that none survived the Battle of the Alamo. It is true that nearly all of the Texans under arms inside the fort were killed in the March 6, 1836, attack. However, nearly twenty women and children, who experienced the twelve days of siege leading to the final assault, were spared and allowed to return to their homes. The survivors also included Joe, the slave of William B. Travis. The best known Alamo survivor, Susanna Dickinson, was sent to Gonzales by Santa Anna with a warning to the Texans that the same fate awaited them if they continued their revolt.7 (For more information about the Survivors, please see the FAQs page of this web site)

Nope, the origin started in the War of 1812 with Andrew Jackson, it became famous with the Alamo because of Davy Crockett on Disney.
