It's a loud unfamiliar noise. The bear would have been off and running.

An air horn is just as effective as bear spray in most cases. Unless it's an abnormally aggressive bear.

Speaking from experience, unless you're shooting a bear or moose or anything with bird shot, they'll be off and running.

We used to cut our bird shot at the wad and leave it hanging by a small piece when we were walking through the bush in bear area. It would only take a second to pop in the cut round and you essentially had a full slug.

Exactly... the gun shot would be loud enough. That's why I didn't understand why the guy wasn't screaming/shouting and using that large stick sideways to give himself the appearance of size. He remained calm but wasn't doing it correctly.

Even if his bear just want to pat him down, give him a sniff and play. You don't want to partake in such bear activities as I doubt it works well with our frayle bodies.

I kept yelling at the screen to hit the trees as he went by with the stick.

I believe either Luke or his father nailed one in the chest from a few feet away with a bird shot. It stepped out in the trail between them and stood up in a pretty threatening manner.

A shot in the chest, a slight backwards roll and it was on it's way back into the woods where it came from.
