Just wanna get your files off it? Ubuntu

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Download the ISO, and burn a CD on another machine. You can then boot right off the CD, without ever touching your lovely ME install.

Just use Ubuntu to get your files...BUT, when and if you get all your chit, consider then INSTALLING Ubuntu, and maybe even (gasp) getting another couple years out of that antique, as Linux is pretty light on hardware.

will ME support plug and play for a thumb drive? My mother's desktop PC had ME until I loaded XP onto it and in order to get a USB thumb drive to work while she still had ME she had to install software for the drive itself.

Eff MS for ever thinking ME was a good idea.

one simple way... take the hard drive out... go buy another computer... buy a USB external hard drive case(click here)... put the old hard drive in.

hook them up. transfer the files you want... off the old hard drive and on to the new.

THEN FORMAT the old drive... probably no bigger than 100gig (if your running ME)... but hell it's a place to keep pics... and shit...

that's what I do...

I said that in the beginning about XP also because it was buggy out of the gate, and because of the hardware requirements. Overall though XP has been less of a support headache for me than Win2K was. The problems got fixed, the hardware came up to a reasonable performance level, and it was stable for several years.

Not to hijack his thread but I have a question that is related. I have AT&T DSL and I am paying for 6MB dl speed. I'm getting well below 3MB with most of the time only getting 1.5MB according to speedtest.net and speakeasy.com. The tech has been out to my house and he replaced the modem and left. It didn't help at all. Why else would my speed be so slow? I ran the speed test with my router out of the loop and the DSL modem wired directly to my PC.

That would be your speed in ideal conditions. Either end could cause the delay and your system's configuration could slow things down too. If this is WinXP try booting up in "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if the performance is noticeably better. If it is, then you have one or more processes running on your system that are messing with your network speed.

This is solid advice.
