I heard they are deliberately slacking off on maintenance of their 3G towers, because they want everyone to go 4G.

There the biggest Company User wise in America and they just seem to fuck there customers over more and more every year with there phone plans. ATT and Verizon must get there jollies off by axing longtime committed customers plans because they can. They already make a shitton of money off texting rates that cost them pennies to run. Why do you think Verizon got all pissy about Iphone's new Imessage integration...Because it doesn't count towards peoples text messaging plans it uses data and it's a way for some people to save money by lowering or eliminating there texting plans completely. Same thing with the Apps out there that do the same thing. So someone who relys heavily on there Unlimited Data is goign to eventually get penalized because there trying to save themselves money in the longrun. If they keep making these "bright" executive decisions there will be enough backlash from there customers that they will Falter. Just look at that Fee they tried to implement a few months back that they backed down on within a week because of the customer backlash from it.

They can do all that because they've had the best network for a long time. Verizon was proven the fastest in both 3G and 4G, per a nationwide test done by PC Magazine a few months ago. People always like to say "Well ATT or Sprint was faster for ME" but they are just talking about their particular neighborhood.
You can try a smaller, cheaper company like USCellular or whatever, but good luck with that if you travel/drive/ride all over the country and want a carrier that actually has decent coverage and doesn't drop calls every time you drive beyond the suburbs or walk into someone's house. So clear this up for me a bit, i'm confused. I currently have a 3G Droid X that I bought 2 July's ago. They say that if you buy a device outright you can still have the unlimited plan. But if I buy a 4G phone, will I have to sign a 4G contract, effectively cancelling my unlimited???
Will the same happen if I, for example, buy a 4G device from Trip. If I go to activate it, will that need a 4G contract?
