If you take both the springs out at the same time, bikes have a nasty habit of collapsing. JC

I wouldn't worry about the fork tube so much as bending the axle

Last time I had my front wheel off, I had the front of the bike hanging from an engine hoist to keep it off the ground

You're both on crack.
The bike will be much more stable to work on with the wheel still in place, and there's no way in hell you're going to bend the axle by removing one spring. You're going to need all the leverage you can get, to get the fork cap back on without screwing up those fine pitched threads. JC

Good point.
Then again, that's when most people find the time to change their springs. Ok, serious note here. I've done a shit-ton of spring replacements/pre-load spacer installs over the years. The hardest part of the job by far, is getting the fork cap back on. You have to push like a mofo to get the thing in place, AND, you have to get it started straight, or you are positively fucked for life. The last thing you need in this situation, is to have the front end swinging around. The less the front end is able to move, the better off you'll be. JC

I've never messed with the fork internals, just the seals and removing the wheel to change the tire
