My first dog lived 17 years. She was an australian shepherd mix. Maybe 40lbs.

I vote boxer as well.

They're the clown prince of dogs.

Loyal, funny, smart, scary looking, and very good with kids.

If it has to be a pure bread I'd go for a Swissy: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/greaterswissmountain.htm

otherwise, I'd say go to a shelter and rescue!

Lots of great info, again thanks everyone. I would prefer to find a shelter dog, but it all depends. I have to have a pup that I have a good idea the size it will eventually be. And it has to be a pup so I can socialize it with my other pets and people.

GM I have no issues being Alpha, when I had my own pack (6 total) there was no question who was the dominant pack leader so I am not worried about that. When I train an animal, it stays trained. When I snap my fingers, they respond. Thats part of the issue I have with labs is they arent as responsive as I expect.

I know what you mean. I snap my finger and Rosco sits. I point, and he goes to where I point and sits.

The puppy refuses to listen, its driving me nuts. Then I remember how much time I spent training Rosco, and I have hope for puppy.

Exactly. I had 6 dogs, ranging from all different sizes and after they passed the puppy stage, all it took was a look and a point to make the whole room sit. Thats what I like to see. This whole dog walking the person is ridiculous. Thats why people have animal issues.

Im removing myself from the soap box before I get started. Thanks everyone...now to convince the hubby...

I've never heard of that breed so thanks for posting. I like learning about different breeds and have owned a few different breeds in the past.

I like the Akita and may get one later but we moved in to a new house in a new neighborhood a while back and decided to get a "mini-me" version.

We ended up with a Shiba Inu...great little dog but only about 28 lbs.

Yes. Does that really make a difference?

I have a strong personality. I am also a very small person. I HATE large dogs that arent trained and I HATE being jumped on. A 100 dog could take me down with a well placed jump. Not acceptable. Therefore when it comes to the whole training an animal (and some husbands ) I am ALPHA.
