Some states make you separate your firearm and ammunition while in the car if you don't have a permit. In MS your car is an extension of your home so you don't have to, I don't know about other states.

That's the way it is here...or at least in some parts of La. In the city, they prefer you to have the gun unloaded with ammunition completely separate. In the parish (at least mine) you can have the gun loaded but it has to be completely visible. It makes carrying without a permit a total PITA.
