Swine Sars!
So dunno if a lot of you know where Nova Scotia is on a map. I know G-REX will. But in any case, our little province holds 4 cases of confirmed swine flu. And day by day and I can just see how much my job is going to suck more than normal as I work as an RN in our province's largest Emerg.
The other day, we ran out of isolation gowns in the whole hospital. So I couldn't even protect myself from people that don't have swine flu but other infectious goodies. The little town where the 4 cases are confirmed (all students as a boarding school that went to Mexico for an exchanged) is suffering from stretched medical resources, cancelations of events/business, etc.... And the idiots that are showing up the various emerg's are in full effect. One patient came in b/c they had "talked" over the phone to someone in Mexico. Anyway... I hope this doesn't get crazy b/c being pregnant and an working in an ER is a little scary. Only b/c it's not been discovered why seemingly younger, healthier Mexicans are dying of this mild flu. Usually takes older, really young and immuno suppressed patients. Kirsty |

Six school districts are now closed for at least two weeks down here.... Nature is trying to make claim the only way it knows how.

the mask thing is a great idea along with the decon thoughts. We're trying to keep all my stuff away from the rest of the house after I travel for that reason.

It's going to be a world wide problem. Great for the disposable gown companies. We have ones that can be laundered and disposable. The initial days of the "outbreak" just put a strain on the existing resources b/c more people were freaking and heading to the hospitals to be examined. They've actually set up a "flu assessment" clinic in the little town to take the strain of their ER. It's been stressed they people who think they might be sick to stay home and not go to hospitals unless they are having real trouble breathing etc... They'll just over burden the ER's and place other's at risk. People wearing masks all day long, when not in the health care setting or dealing with certain populations of people just look silly. Hand washing and covering your mouth is still the best practice. I wouldn't be traveling to Mexico any time soon though and I'm a little worried about flying on a plane - only b/c the constant circulating air gets me sick every time regardless if they have a hepa-filter in airplane. |
