Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon...thoughts?
Looking at picking up a used Tahoe next week. Our Kia just isn't big enough for two adults, two kids and 3 large dogs anymore.
I can get them used all day under $10k. Anyone ever have one, how many miles did it last you for? All the used ones I'm finding seem to have close to 100k on them, which I figure is ok...

I have 101k on my Avalanche (GMT800, same crap), and thinking about selling it
Hasn't failed me yet, and I routinely tow over capacity, load it down, pound it offroad in the desert, and cruise at top speed for stupidly long stretches. They're really cheap to work on if anything does go wrong and very simple. Everything is out in the open. You just have to make sure to flush the trans / 4wd transfer case / diff oil every 15-30k. That's the one thing people neglect and results in failures. Are you towing big? If so make sure to get the 4.10 gears. |

Nah, will probably get a jon boat at some point, nothing heavy. No, I need space for 7, cold A/C and reliability. I see a ton of these things going for $7k with around 140k miles on Craigslist, or I can get one with around 80k miles for around $10k.
If I pay $7k for a Tahoe that gives me 100k miles I'd say I did pretty good.

Then get the taller gears. The 07+ has cyl deactivation which helps with fuel economy a bunch. These things slurp gas, esp if you go fast on the freeway, but they're simple and hard to destroy. Diffs / transfer cases are the only area I know of that can have issues. Get a 2wd if you're not going offroad...or a minivan if you're not towing anything heavy

just remember if you grab one with nearly 100,000 miles it will need a lot of initial maint. that is the point where things start to break unless regular maint has been performed. many people get there and then dump the vehicle before they put money into it. spark plugs, differentials, transfer case, transmission, hubs, bearings and u joints are just a few things that need attention at the 100 k point. not that they don't need attn earlier just if they haven't been looked at they could all go within a short time span.
I do like the fact that the Chevy is very easy to work on. Parts are available everywhere and if you're interested in aftermarket you can do anything you want to it. I haven't really heard of any bad Chevy issues with the newer trucks at all. |

I got 330k out of my 96' Suburban before I sold it to my buddy. Had 1 tranny rebuild in that time. It's still running like a champ.
