We've been on the same road.

I went to Harlan Kentucky in June, for an ADV rider BYOB camp-out. God, what a shit hole. They didn't even sell beer there (I guess cause life was so fucking great there, they didn't need it ) Your description is pretty spot on, total squalor, but some really nice roads.

I rolled into Pikeville (I think) after midnight, and there was a rather lame strip mall with a Kmart and 7-8 other stores. All the locals were cruising back and forth in front of these stores. Just doing a u-turn at the end of the strip and driving back and forth. I went into an Arby's across the street, and if you bought a Chicken Cordon Bleau meal deal, you got a free t-shirt with a drawing of a Corvette on it saying "I cruise the plaza"
