Default Gun choice question

I've been saving for a Sig 5.56 which I just love for some reason after all I've read.

But I've also wanted a Ruger Mini-14 forever as well.

The gun shop has both, and they're within $200 of each other. The mini-14 is stainless, and the Sig is the long version, so side by side they are the same length and variant.

Anyone had experience with both/either?

Pro's/con's?

I know the accessories for the Sig are thru the roof.....extra mags, lights, mounts...etc...so I know I can just about double the price for overall after it's all said and done, and the ruger is a model thats been out so long that extras for it are next to nothing....but.....the sig

I've never picked up or held either. I've heard good things about both. Each is 5.56 / .223 yes? That Sig looks bad-fucking-ass, I can say that much. Both look fun to shoot, but that Sig is sexy.

The Mini 14 were a constant retrun and repair when I had a gunshop in the Mid 80s They have improved som but you would be better served by the SIG IMHO better feeding system and more accurate. Same also could be said of any of the Stoner Rifles as well. Another option that may be more cost effective than the sige and better over all options and accuracy is a Inexpensive AR and a piston conversion Kit. Gives you a far more reliable system that direct gas impingement and lets you use all the standard AR accessories and Mags

I owned a Mini-14 stainless and liked it partially due to getting it for a real good price.

The only negatives that I've seen is that 'most' of them aren't very accurate. Mine seemed ok but if you do a search MANY people complain about the accuracy.

I sold it and put the $$ toward an AR-15 kit and put one together myself and love it.

Here is the Mini I had and the AR I replaced it with.

a mini 14 is a waste of time. Nothing like its big brother. Get yourself an m1a socom 16 or socom II. You wont regret it.

The Mini-14 is cool, but for similar money that Sig is really nice and is what I would get.

Yeah I hope it's there when the ship comes in.....it's the low-end version (which is all I could afford...all the rest are $1000+)

I'd LOVE the swat version but it's $1250+

We'll see.

From what all I've read, the Mini-14's accuracy over 75 yards is completely dependent on bullet weight

When using a 180gr bullet they tend to tumble and lose stability after 80 yrds. A 240gr is best.

I've shot mini-14's and they are a good gun for what the original design intention was...throw it behind the seat of your truck in case you need it sometime. It was never intended to be a real accurate rifle and there's not a lot you can do to it cheap to accurize one. THey are fun to shoot though.

I really like that SIG! I'd got with it personally but that's just my opinion.

Pretty much summed it up. I'd call the Mini 14 a farmers or ranch gun, good for ground hogs and other shit tearing up your fields. When you get done toss it in the corner and let it be. Accuracy, is decent with the Mini, but I think the Sig would be your best bet.

If your shooting bowling pins at 50 yards go Mini, if your shooting paper targets at 100+ go Sig.
