Buy a canyon dancer and 4 racheting tiedowns if you're going to use a truck. Then, the gate can be closed, making it nearly impossible to fall.
My brother and I had Canyon Dancer straps. Loved those things.

Gee whiz, I've never hauled a bike before...How do you do it again, mister?

The bed of the truck is 78'' and the bike is 80''... Now I have "squeezed a bike into the bed before to make it work but it's not that necessary imho. I'm sure that I'll manage, thanks. Besides, I'm renting the truck so this isn't a permanent thing.

Why does the gate need to be closed, anyway? I guess if you have a lot of extra crap in the bed and are worried about it flying out, but nothing a couple cargo straps can't handle.

Always looking for something to criticize, I guess... I don't plan to carry anything in the back because of the possibility of crappy weather.
