You're bang-on (pardon the pun) right, there. He was fine in fighting back, even with a weapon because he was out numbered, but he's screwed because he kept whacking at them after they went down. He's screwed.

People like that don't learn their lessons though. They're going to think of themselves as being wronged and put-upon.

He wasn't even fine in the beginning. You don't use a potentially lethal weapon unless you are reasonably afraid for your life. He had no reason to feel as such. The whole "oh one of the chicks might have had a knife" argument is weak.
