Did he want it to blow up? From the moment he smelled it, it sounds like he kept pushing his luck until it blew.

That was my thought to, but when I read that he was in the car when it blew up I realized he was just stupid.

I wouldn't have closed a door after smelling the acetylene if I were him, on the off chance a spark from the door strike would ignite the fumes. DEFINITELY wouldn't have turned the key on, sending power to everything inside, much less cranked it over. If the power windows hadn't set it off, I wonder if he was going to light a cigarette to relax while the car aired out?

Soooo........how would this fall under car insurance?

I dont drive an auto so I dont know this. Can you get into neutral without turning the key to "ON?"

If it's an automatic, you have to turn it at least to the "run" position, which would send power to all the electronics in the vehicle.

Fuck Neutral. (Manually) Open the garage door and get the fuck out of Dodge for a couple of hours at least. A small balloon full of Acetylene and a small static shock has been known to open a Chev Pick up like a tin can. With a leaking tank, he's lucky he survived.

I have always wondered why they design them that way - There should be a safety interlock release next to the shifter so you can put it in neutral without turning the key or hitting the brake just like the one that's there in case the brake switch fails.

Edit- now that I think about it, I wouldn't even want to open the damn door - dome light comes on... Yikes.

Yep, some are just a PITA to reach. Without an interlock override, towing a disabled vehicle would be interesting.
