But at the cost of extra heat. You want a notebook with a good fan, if you're upgrading the HDD like that. There goes the quite operation requirement.

I have heard that the more recent, 320GB+ 5400rpm drives are faster than the old 5400rpm drives, due to tech improvements.

Depends on the cache size.

Been using my ASUS for a few days and Im pretty impressed with how quickly it wakes from sleep, almost instantly, and how long the battery lasts. No SSD here.

I also have a 2006 Dell inspiron. I think i paid around 5-600 for it and its still kicking. My P is a bit stuck and my wireless card stopped working this year, but other than that i haven't had any issues. Just got a usb wireless thing at walmart for $10 and all is fine now

The wireless cards on many Dell notebooks are an accessory card. It might be as simple as unplugging the card and plugging it back in, as they work loose with time and travel. If it's a card then it'll be accessible via one of the small doors on the bottom of the notebook, that are held in with tiny Phillips head screws.

Anything but HP. Had two of them, and they were the most shitty manufactured POS's i've ever laid hands on. Everyone I know who has had one has had them fall apart, especially the connector for the power cord.

Now I have a Toshiba Sattelite, I like it. But its just for web surfing. I have a desktop I use a lot more, but its a high end gaming rig.

The power connector breaking I believe has to do more with people that jamb tye connector in too hard. Probably the same people that slam doors.
