Based on the size of the vapor trial coming off the leading edge of the wings I'd say he was going slow enough that you would hear him coming several seconds before he got there.

Not always, the F18s can actally be kind of quiet when they want to be.

I have had them shake my windows from 10000ft, and other times, they are quiet from a much closer distance.

My lil bro was a plane captain for a USMC F18 squadron and even worked with the Blue Angels Navy demo team. I know he spoke of the rigorous rules pertaining to flights around civilian areas. What I know of it makes this flyby scenario very suspiscious and unlikey. The Art. Claims they had permission to do the fly by but all the rules for airshows and event flyovers would not have allowed them to pass so closely to a occupied public building...

I simply think the plane is further from the building than people may believe based on the perspective of the picture.

That's what I was thinking.

Depends on the speed. I spent a few years on an aircraft carrier and I've watched many of F-18 takeoff, land and fly by. The slower the speed the earlier you will hear them. If they are going super fast you wont hear them until they pass you. This plane is not going that fast.

The wing span on an F-18F is 43.5 feet. That plane would have to be pretty damn close comparing the scale of the building and the scale of the plane.

Detroit Gets Close Encounter With Jet
Residents Mixed About Flyover

POSTED: Monday, July 13, 2009
UPDATED: 7:19 pm EDT July 13, 2009
DETROIT -- The excitement at the annual speed boat races along the Detroit river Sunday wasn't confined to just the water.

Navy Jet Flies Too Close For Some

A scheduled fly-over by an F-18 Navy jet was captured by a photographer and the picture is getting attention nationwide.

The picture shows the jet, turned sideways, zooming past a high-rise Detroit apartment complex. It appears to be very close to the building.

"It felt like the sky was falling," said tenant Carol Stover, who saw the jet. "I looked up and saw the jet and I was praying we weren't under attack."

The picture, which appeared in the Detroit News, New York Post and on the "Today" show Monday, was taken by Detroit News photographer Steve Perez.

"As I was going back to edit I saw it and it just kind of jumped out (at you)," said Perez. "It's one of those things that's just timing and luck."

Tenant Inez Brown watched the fly-over from her balcony on the 28th floor. "I didn't get the perspective that they were that close. I was like a kid in the candy store. I got a chance to see some professional fighter pilots in action and that's something you don't see everyday. They did some phenomenal maneuvers."

According to the military, the jet was actually about 200 to 300 feet away from the shoreline. Authorities said no one on the ground or in a building was ever at any risk.

Oh look, people on the internets calling "FAKE" when someone posts a cool picture.

Glad I got to experience something new today.
