Several good Samaritans were involved in a car crashes early Friday morning while trying to protect a fallen motorcycle rider.

Motorists said they saw the motorcyclist racing down Central Expressway at more than 100 mph before the rider lost control and struck a car near Mockingbird Lane just after midnight.

The rider was thrown from the motorcycle, which continued on down the highway for about a quarter of a mile before crashing.

The good Samaritans, who saw the man laying in the roadway, positioned their vehicles around the fallen rider so that he wouldn't be struck by oncoming traffic. In the process, their vehicles were rear-ended.

"My car is totaled, but what are you going to do in that situation? You can't just drive by or run the gentleman over. You have to stop ... at least we were in a vehicle to protect us," said Mark Mansfield, driver.

One of the drivers even got out of her vehicle to attempt to direct traffic around the crash site by hand.

"This one woman went out in the middle of traffic to help this gentleman and could have herself been killed, but she did what she could to stop traffic so he would not be hit again," said Mansfield.

While the scene was cleared, all of the northbound lanes of Central Expressway were closed. The motorcycle rider was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. Police said one of the good Samaritans may have suffered a broken leg in one of the car crashes.

Officers said those who tried to stop and render aid will not face any charges in connection with the secondary crashes.

"They did what anybody, you know, in their good heart would want to do, is to protect that victim. They used their vehicle to block it. They're doing the right thing," said Lt. Jimmy Vaughn with the Dallas Police Department.

The northbound side of the highway reopened before rush hour Friday.
