I have a somewhat similar problem, I do not tuck at all either. I get my fat ass off the bike, but I don't tuck. I have read somewhere that you are actually somewhat better off if you are upright, because your center of gravity is actually higher, which will give you inherent stability. For us mere mortals the increase in speed in a corner that can be gained from tucking is unimportant. Some of my pics for reference:

In this one you can kinda see the line straight back from the gas cap hits me right at about mid-thigh:


In both pics I'm sitting upright, and your right, it's deceiving! Check out the clearance on the case cover/shifter in the first pic.
