"The glory days of Trans-Am racing will get a modern spin this weekend, as a 2010 Camaro takes to the track with livery inspired by the one of the most recognizable race cars of all time - the Roger Penske-fielded No. 6 Sunoco Camaro of 1969. Modern versions of the Camaro's fiercest rivals of roughly 40 years ago will be on-hand as well, with both a Mustang GT and Dodge Challenger prepared to put up a fight for the checkered flag.

Making the Sunoco Camaro entry even more special is the drivers behind the wheel. Forty years ago, the consecutive two-time Trans Am championship-winning Sunoco Camaro was piloted by legendary co-drivers Mark Donohue and Ronnie Bucknum. This weekend, the 2010 Sunoco Camaro will feature David Donohue and Jeff Buknum behind the wheel - both sons of the original drivers who have forged out distinguished racing careers of their own.
"We are excited to have Sunoco on board with us," Donohue told Speed TV recently. "And for the first time in my carreer I am more comfortable with playing off my dad's reputation than I have ever been in the past."

"When I first started driving, I really didn't understand my place or his place in racing or how his reputation might affect mine, or vice versa. Over time I have come to be more comfortable with my own abilities and accomplishments, and if I am a flop in this, I won't see it as a reflection on my father's record. All I can do is go out and do the best job I can and I am OK with that."

Bucknum too, is looking forward to the race drive, as well as the opportunity to drive with Donohue.

"I am so excited to be a part of a program that brings so much history together in today's sports car racing," Bucknum said. "I have enjoyed working on setting up this program not only for personal reasons, but also for the chance to get to know David Donohue."

The action all happens this Sunday, October 4, as the Grand-Am Koni Challenge series runs its season-closing Bosch Octoberfest race at Virginia International Raceway. The series is filled with production-based cars, and it appears the toughest competition may come in the form of the No. 59 Rehagen Racing/986 Driver Cooling Ford Mustang GT that is currently leading the series championship.
