The first 30' or so of the guardrail (end unit) is specifically designed to asbsorb the energy and divert the vehicle back so that it will move along the guardrail.

Wrong place at the wrong time. This isn't the norm at all obviously.

Now you design the guardrails but then theyre built/assembled by some union or municipal employees. Safe to say soemthing gets lost in the translation
