Default Downsizing

So, hell of a day at work today... 8 people fired from our company in 1 day. And, of course, most of those 8 were the people that were doing actual work instead of the jack offs that get to stay and no one can figure out why... When we asked who was going to do what (insert name of fired person here) was doing, they never give you a good answer. You know right then that means that YOU are going to end up with even more work... Job security's ass... I'm grateful to still have a job, but I'm also realistic. You can only pile so much on me before I screw something up because I just didn't have the time to devote to doing it right, then guess who'll be next...

the non-productive are usually the one's who lobby for the dismissal of the productive. The non-productive spend their time on office politics instead of working...this is how they get job security, by eliminating threats

I know what you mean. We have been doing that for 6+ months now, downsizing.
Just do the best you can, write down your responsibilities, the time it takes you, etc.
Ask for people to give you deadlines, etc to help prioritize and if it gets out of control talk to your boss - if that is possible.

Yep. I'm prime example of that.

That happened to me for months before i finally got laid off. They closed down 3 departments and heaped all the work on ours without any extra compensation.

So now we are doing the job of 4 departments and with the extra added responsibilities and in a crap economy and were still expected to hit sales quotas from a year ago when the economy was ok for us.

They kept telling us we should be grateful we had a job. I thought they should be grateful we stayed. The morale in our department got so bad after a while, we all just wanted to get laid off.

Believe me, after the last few days, I'd quit in a heartbeat if I had any reasonable prospect of finding another job that would pay what I'm making now, but I don't. Right now, I'm just trying to put out any fires that seem critical and just damping down or ignoring others. They authorized overtime, but I'm not going to kill myself to fix their mistakes in firing too many people at once...
