Default Need a decent antivirus program...

PC got infected (XP pro)

It disabled AVG (won't start or scan) and the machine won't boot in safe mode.

Any antivirus recs?

(posted from my Mac, which has never had antivirus software on it)

Have you tried to download Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool?
Have you tried Malwarebytes? I use AVG and I don't know of any other good free AV SW.

remove AVG
reboot
Install Malwarebytes.
run full scan.
reboot
Reinstall AVG
reboot
full scan.
Remove AVG
reboot
Install Avast
run full scan.
reboot
rescan with malware bytes

Should do the trick to clean you out.

I've used Avast for awhile now (switched from AVG after AVG became a resource hog) and have had no problems. combined with Malwarebytes and firefox....clean as a whistle.

It doesn't demand $50. they just try and get people to switch from Home Free edition to Professional edition.

Install Avast! Home Edition - Free.
It asks for an email address, give em a valid one because they send you a license key.
Once you get pass the initial trial period it asks you to register it using the key they send you.
Every 18 months they ask you to re-register.

Each time they try to up-sell you by putting the "no thanks...just re-register the free edition" link in REALLY small font, buried in all the "Upgrade to professional edition" banners

Avast...

I've been running it for 9 months on a laptop running Windows 7 (beta then RC to RTM) and it's been flawless.

It's the only thing I have installed and it's stopped everything. I also use this computer for my "questionable" surfing.

I love that too, especially since I have been running a PC for almost 15 years with no anti virus software, and have never had a problem.

BTW, stop surfing the goat porn Sean.

I don't buy that A) you've been without antivirus / firewall for 15 years and haven't gotten infected and B) that you don't surf goat porn.

Malwarebytes is finding shit, thanks peeps.

The last 3 infections I got were polymorphic, and took manual removal (2-3 days).

Some tools were helpful, but nothing can get it all, and nothing can really touch the most evil polymorphic shit.
