Obviously I don't have a GS...but my dog will have a baby around at some point. Manny is great with kids. He's been around other people and kids since we first got him. Labs in general LOVE people, Manny is no exception. Kids love him, they pull his ears, pull his tail, etc...he doesn't care. He'll be excellent when the kids are around permanently.

Many dogs that come to rescue have health issues, some of them are really sad as you probably know.

Anyway, I'm sure that Hanna is undergoing treatment or will be soon.

Neebs, for the most part GSD's are good with kids, but any dog needs to be watched when around kids.

As far as GSD's go, the Americanized line of dogs are the less desirable and more prone to health issues. The German, Chech and a few other european lines are much more desireable because they have to be licensed to breed their dogs and the dogs have to be Schutzhund certified in be bred. This ensures that there is the best chance for good disposition and health in the breed. I would highly recommend a kennel in the ATL area if you want to check them out. I was hoping to get one from them myself a couple years ago but had to put it off for a while. I have been to their kennel and seen the dogs they had then and they are very impressive. Just a little heads up, if you haven't reserched the european breeds yet, they are very expensive compared to american breeds but are worth the money. Here's the website and you can learn a lot on it too.

edit to add: while you can get a good dog from a rescue, they are much more likey to have been mistreated or not cared for well and can be more likely to have temperment issues that don't show right away. With a large breed dog like a GSD that can be ugly if it shows up with a kid. Just something to watch for and think about.

all depends on the dog, think of it like a person most are good all have quirks and some are just nuts. I have a 2 year old pure GS hes great with kids hardly ever jumps up and is mellow until you chase him. The only other dog i have been around that was as good as this guy was my old black lab.
