Default sportbikers crash alot

CA and FLA are the highest # of biker deaths, TX #3

"In 2008, the under age 20 age group had the largest increase in motorcycle fatalities (up 57% from 13 in 2007 to 30 in 2008 with the second highest increase seen in the over age 59 age group which increased 44% percent from 32 in 2007 to 57 in 2008.** "

"Super sport motorcycles, defined as consumer versions of the motorcycles used by factory racing teams, account for 14% of the registered motorcycles in California, yet the 211 super sport drivers and passengers killed in 2008 accounted for 38% of the 560 motorcyclists killed in California.

** Between 2002-08, 44% of Super Sport motorcycles that were fatally crashed were less than a year old, compared to 37% Other Sport, 28% Cruiser, and, 34% Touring motorcycles.
** Between 2002-08, 44% of Super Sport riders killed were not properly licensed, compared to 32% Other Sport, 24% Cruisers and 19% Touring motorcycles.
** Between 2002-08, 86% of Super Sport motorcycle fatal crashes were “speed related”, compared to 57% Other Sport, 40% Cruisers, and 39% Touring motorcycles
** Between 2002-08, 66% of Super Sport motorcycle operators killed were between age 21-34.** "

Most people kille dbetween age 21 and 34 is a result of trauma anyway so those stats arent much of a reach anyway, and seems like theyre stating the obvious anyway.

I'd hazard a somewhat educated 'guess' that you'll find the same age banded stats for cars.

And, uh, duh that sportbikes are in the higher % - what 21 year old can afford a brand new freakin' Harley (or would want to when they can get a brand new sportbike for a fraction of the cost)? I'd wager that if Harley's were cheaper you'd see just as many crashes in that age band with Harleys. Kids like to go fast - that ain't rocket science.

For cars I would lump the teenagers in there too. Seems new/teen drivers seem ot be getting more and more attention as of late.

This is all news how?

How many of you with sport bikes for sale have dealt with young and/or unlicensed first-time riders looking to buy your slightly used 130hp superbike; no training, no MSF, no experience; just looking to buy the fastest bike they can afford and GO?

I visit a lot of bike shops, and everyone has brand-new sportbikes with almost 0 miles on them sitting in the service dept that were crashed by new riders who hadn't made it a mile before crashing....

I know there is a certain contingent that advocate that a full-on sportbike is a good first bike....

....looks like not so much, on the whole.....

Some of us were those guys at one point too. Another thing to add is how fast things have advanced with technology on these bikes and how you can get yourself in more trouble now than on a 600 from the 90's.

I am fine with those kids crashing those bikes too since it makes more cheaper track bikes available

for me this is the first time i've seen a stat. that points out sportbikes specifically. usually it's age, and while a minority young guys do ride cruisers.
