Wow. Of the many things I do in my field, guardrail design is one of them. Those pictures are amazing, but it does make me question if the end unit of the guardrail was intact or in place at all, as I don't see any remnants of it.
The first 30' or so of the guardrail (end unit) is specifically designed to asbsorb the energy and divert the vehicle back so that it will move along the guardrail. Wrong place at the wrong time. This isn't the norm at all obviously.
