(sometimes, firing up the grill is a good excuse to get the f*ck out of the house and away from the noise though)

Ive made some pretty good steaks in a similar way, I live in an apartment where grilling isnt an option. Superheat a heavy bottom pan, doesnt need to be cast iron, just heavy. Preheat the over to 450. Prepare the steak whatever way you want, I like putting butter on both sides but that tends to make a lot of smoke. Sear on side of the steak for 1 minute then flip it over in the pan and put the whole thing in the over for 7 minutes.

Done.

That is the exact skillet I used. Heat the skillet,a small amount of olive oil on the steak and 4 minutes per side. Wife had bought aged rib eyes and I just wanted to try it out. We also made some goat cheese/sun dried tomato/caper butter to go on them. Really easy and great flavor. Of course,sea salt and cracked pepper on the steak. Let steak come to room temp. Etc....

Gah... tell me about it.
I set mine off pan searing a steak the other day. Weather allowing, I try to get some external airflow by opening the door to the balcony when I'm going to be cooking something that I know will smoke a little. Even then it'll still set them off sometimes.
Better that than being alerted too late to escape a fire, or so they tell us
