Um...I was asking for his point of view regarding what constituted a professional look. Seemed like it was more opinion and I was curious.

It just seemed like an odd question to post right after you asked it. I mean, to quote the article:

Quote:
Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore says Strain's boss told the officer to cut his hair to look more "professional."

Vanore says officers' hats must fit "in a military manner" over their hair, and that Strain's hat did not. Strain got a haircut; he declined comment to the paper.

Vanore recalled only one black officer with braids in the past several years. He says that officer also was told to get a haircut.
So, it's the hairstyle interfering with their hat that makes it unprofessional - for both white AND black officers. As an officer it isn't about being trendy, it's about looking the part.

Because it looks 'gangsta'
I know cops are people too, but as a person of authority, maintaining a clean-cut, professional image is important.
Perhaps what fits within those parameters seems judgmental or arbitrary sometimes, but it creates the necessary separation between officers and civilians.
