Vacuuming is serious business.

We had a Hoover windtunnel for 8 years. Worked great but the motor finally burnt out. Just bought the Dyson Animal, My wife says it's just as good as the hoover was and is easier to empty.

Retail was $588. We got it at Kohl's for $300 by combining a few coupons.

we had a heavy assed Kirby for a while... worked really well. If you want to build upper body strength, lug one of those suckers around for a while

I spent $250 on a Hoover canister that lasted 16 years and just died the other week.

I just purchased a Dyson DC17 Animal at Bed,Bath & Beyond for $440. I signed up for emails and got a 20% coupon good for one item. That lowered the cost from $550 to $440

It works great and is easy to empty. It pulled all kinds of nasty shit out of our carpets.

It even got the "Mochi paw of approval"

I have a Rainbow E series for sale if you are interested. I paid $1600 for it. I'll let it go for $500.

Since you mentioned hardwood floors, I have to note, all of your larger carpet designed vacs will usually just blow the dirt and pet hair around, and AWAY from the vacuum.

Take the rugs out regularly and beat them, . Im serious. Shake them, and pickup a bagless, allergenless type vac if you must vacuum them.

For the floors themselves, pick up a cheap, $20 dirt devil knock off at walmart. Cheap, easy to carry around, and the best part is, they dont blow the fur and dirt around. I had 6 dogs, 3 cats and 2 ferrets at one time, and unless you saw them running around, you would never have known I had pets. Im kinda OCD about it.

Heres a pic of what is similar to what I always use, great for hardwood, tile and linoleum.

And this too:
