Whenever I see a Corolla or Camry, I change lanes, because I know that person is going to drive slow as shit.

Good quality car, but 24/29 mpg? Weaksauce......I was expecting a lot more.

Two things are affecting your expectations. First, that is for the 3 speed auto and not the 4 speed slushie or 5 speed manual, both of which do significantly better.

Second, keep in mind the EPA rejiggered how they reach their mileage estimates a few years ago. In the process they went back and lowered them for older cars as well. A 2000 5 speed Corolla is now listed at 27 city/34 highway. It used to be 31 city/38 highway. The 3 speed slushbox from the video used to be 28c/32h. Go look up some of the past cars you view as having been "efficient" and I'll bet they don't live up to your expectations either.

Hmm, I did not know this. Still, my parents used to get low 40's from their early 90's base Civic quite regularly. Today cars are 500 lbs heavier, and if you want something lightweight you're stuck buying Minis or Miatas.

Those aren't even particularly lightweight. 2500 lbs (about what the Mini and Miata weigh) is light compared to most of the other cars made today but the Miata has gained 300 lbs since the first generation (increase of about 15%) while the new Mini weighs damn near 1,000 lbs more than the original Mini (sold until 2000 in England).

Concerning the mileage your parents were getting with that Civic look it up on fueleconomy.gov . It is the EPA's website listing mileage. I'll bet they were getting better mileage than the EPA now says the car is capable of. The Corolla should respond similarly to a lighter foot.

My GF use to have a Carolla with a 4cyl and that fucker was slow as shit (but mileage kicked assed compared to my 13mpg truck). Though one time on a slight uphill in slick conditions I managed to get the front tires to spin and once the RPMs got up and the tires got moving that fucker was spinning.

She got a Rav4 with a V6 now and that son of a bitch is a beast with 270hp in a small ass SUV.
